What I love about this recent family session are the attire colors selected by my clients who were vacationing at TradeWinds Island Resort in St Pete Beach, Florida. Their clothing selections for their family beach portrait session look great against the lovely crisp blue skies and white sand. The whites and creams, various shades of blue and the pop of magenta really work at the beach. Plus most everyone owns a pair of jeans and the little boys navy pants and shorts add another tone of blue.

The humidity has dropped this month in St Petersburg to perfect fall Florida beach weather. But it is fun to look back at some of our late summer beach portrait sessions. This particular family was staying at Sunset Vistas Beachfront Suites and walked out their backdoor to meet us on the beach at our favorite location in Treasure Island. The kids were adorable at this family session, and it is so nice to see an extended family vacationing together.
I am often asked what to wear for beach family portrait sessions. This family selected one of the most popular color combinations for beach portrait sessions; white and tans. These outfits were fitting for this warm August evening. I especially like the belt the mom wore to add visual interest to her cute white dress. I like the popularity of white attire for beach sessions, but don’t forget be afraid of bold accessories to compliment the white fabric so it doesn’t fade into pale sand.

These amazing seersucker monogrammed outfits were bought online at Smocked threads by Cecil and Lou, which hosts auctions on their Facebook page of current adorable childrens’ clothes, many of which are perfect for beach sessions.

As expected, my awesome partner Scott Krebs nailed the post-sunset portraits lit using two SaberStrips. These modifiers are perfect for the beach, as they do so well in the breezes which naturally increase around sunset.

How adorable are these proud, involved grandparents?!

And we always allow time for some fun photos; OHIO!

My client was vacationing with her family for a week at the Guy Harvey Outpost at TradeWinds Island Grand Resort in St Pete Beach FL and booked me to photograph her senior portraits. This section of TradeWinds Resort has been recently updated and offered some great interior courtyard spaces for photos. We started with my client wearing a fun black and white stripe dress with great wedge heels. I love that she had her hair and makeup done for this session; it really makes a positive difference in the photos.

After changing into a simple white tee and adorable dark jeans, I photographer my client along the dunes on the north side of the Guy Harvey Outpost.

My client is a dancer and I think its adorable that she had 2015 on the bottom side of her tap shoes, in ankles crossed formation. Very cute idea and these couches by the outdoor fire pits at Guy Harvey Outpost were an ideal location for these shots.
This evenings sunset was subtle since the skies were relatively clear night, but produced a nice soft color band in the sky.

This senior portrait session was so much fun! It was a thrill to photograph Lily, the sister of one of my previous senior portrait clients. Lily lives in inland Florida and decided the beach would be a great location for her session. I had her stop by the house so I could help select outfits; one of my favorite parts of designing a senior portrait session. Lily is a natural beauty (like her sister) and I love how her hazel eyes and warm medium brown hair pop in these senior portraits.
We headed out to St Pete Beach Treasure Island on for a sunset shoot on a beautiful warm night. Scott and I started out shooting these first portraits of Lily in her blue dress with natural light.

For a few images while the sun was quite bright, I utilized off camera high speed synch fill to allow me to shoot at 2.8 at 4000th of a second with my Nikon D800 in commander mode with our Radio Popper PX triggers.

We walked out towards the water and took advantage of the gorgeous dunes this beach offers. Mom’s favorite dress was this cute red strapless and I think it looks amazing in this beach setting. Typically at this time of day we photograph our strobist shots with an Einstein and a 50 inch soft box. Scott likes to add a neutral density filter to get to nice portrait aperatures. When the sun was covered by the clouds I turned off my triggers and photographed Lily in natural light.

Closer to sunset we moved towards the waters edge where I like shoot a few remaining moments of natural light. At this time, Scott prepares two Saberstrips on a boom stand. Lily’s sister loaned her the cute colorful top and I love how it compliments the soft pastel colors of the sky at sunset.

On the drive back into St Petersburg, I had Lily change into this cute black dress and Scott suggested this location near the Green Bench Brewing Co. Scott handheld one SaberStrip for me while I quickly captured these images with my 85mm at 2.8. It was fun to give Lily another look and setting to her senior portrait session.
