Downtown Saint Petersburg FL Senior Portrait Session

Sometimes an overcast and slightly rainy summer afternoon allows for a great Senior portrait photo session.

I met Chloe’s dad, Lee last summer while visiting Scott in Calgary, Canada.  Lee joined Scott on some outdoor adventures in Banff and Kananaskis, and I remember hearing about one memorable snowy hike to Ribbon Falls which involved a smart decision to turn around at the chains. A year later, Lee’s daughter Chloe needed her senior portraits taken, and I was thrilled that they liked my photography portfolio and hired me to photograph Chloe.

I was excited to meet and work with Chloe, and within minutes I knew we were going to have a great portrait session. In additional to her natural beauty, Chloe has an effervescent personality which lights up in front of the camera. She will be starting her first year of college in weeks, and her decision to study Hospitality Management suits her warm and confident presence.

After selecting outfits, we drove around downtown Saint Petersburg FL looking for ideal light and locations. Since it was an overcast day, I  photographed the session with natural light and sometimes adding fill light from one SaberStrip on a light stand with a Nikon SB 800 inside.

Cherry Hills Colorado Wedding with an Elegant French Estate Inspired Pink Rose Theme

My clients hosted their wedding at their home in Cherry Hills, a community south of downtown Denver Colorado. The bride’s inspiration for the wedding theme and decor came from Sofia Coppola’s  film Marie Antoinette. Various shades of pink, creams and pale blues were used throughout the French inspired wedding decor and flowers.

The entire estate was decorated with floral arrangements. Feather  and rose topiaries were located at the driveway entrance to the home,  rose pomander balls hung from the trees, and a white carriage was adorned with flowers and feathers in the front yard. The couples initials in gold were also hung from the trees.pink rose weddingpink rose wedding flower

The couple decided to have a daytime private ceremony with their immediate families and children in their rose garden. Their florist created a fabric lined canopy for the ceremony site, adorned with pink roses. Cream couches allowed family members to be comfortably seated during the morning ceremony.  Lunch was catered and everyone was able to relax in the afternoon.wedding carriage roses

Guests arrived in the early evening, greeted by the Bride and Groom at the front foyer door. Guests walked through the main floor of the home to the cocktail hour, located on a stone patio. A massive fountain  in the patio courtyard was decorated with flowers and handmade pillows to create a comfortable retreat for guests.cherryhillscoloradowedding12

The Marie Antoinette theme continued during the Cocktail hour with passed for d’oeuvres and food stations with delicacies such as sautéed frogs leg. Three signature cocktails were designed and served  by the couples favorite bartender, in addition to french wines and champagnes.

Guests walked off the patio to open tent in the Bride and Groom’s yard featuring long tables covered in blue raw silk. An elegant plated multi course meal was served under candlelight.

Saint Petersburg FL Warehouse Arts District Portraits of Tiago

saint petersburg florida portrait photographer

Several times a year I join some fellow strobist photographers and local Tampa Bay models for an on location group photography session. I had met Tiago at a Museum of Fine Arts Saint Petersburg FL Erotic Art opening exhibition a few months prior and decided to invited him to model at our photo session in the Warehouse Arts District of Saint Petersburg, which covers a large area that runs from First Avenue North to Sixth Avenue South and 14th to 28th streets. Starting in 2000,  with Saint Petersburg Clay Company, the district has attracted painters, glass blowers, ceramic artists, and metal workers who live and work in this industrial area of Saint Petersburg.

Tiago accepted and joined us at U562 Art Studios and Showroom, a gallery and working artist studio. We walked around the surrounding neighborhood and I spotted this blue pickup and last light in the sky.Working quickly, my assistant hand held one SaberStrip flash modifier for these shots, with my SB-800 inside triggered by a Radio Popper Jr. I shot my D700 with my Nikon 85mm lens at 2.8, ISO 200.

I love how Tiago’s clothes draw upon the blue pickup and then worked very well when I photographed him in front of glass artist Duncan McClellan’s studio doors. I spotted Duncan when we first arrived and he kindly offered for us to shoot in his studios gorgeous gated exterior garden. I thanked him for the generous offer but declined knowing that I had my eye on this door. I love how the light front the Saberstrip shadows the metal work on the door.

I strongly recommend visiting the Saint Petersburg Arts District during on of its Second Friday trolly tours. People can park at any of the stops and hop on the trolley, which will take them to about two dozen studios where art is made and sold.

Cinco de Mayo Perfect Margarita Recipe with Habernero Sugar Rim

perfect margarita recipe

Happy Cinco De Mayo 2013! I love making margaritas and my recipe has evolved into my signature cocktail. This year I decided to share my recipe via a food blog post; my very first food blog post.

Cooking is my favorite creative pursuit after photography. There is nothing more relaxing than creating a meal for friends and family. I hope to continue sharing my favorite recipes and cooking techniques in the “Life” section of the Kristen Sloan Photography blog.

Here is what you will need to make a perfect margarita!

perfect margarita recipe 2013

This recipe is quite simple. One part orange liquor, one part lime juice, one part tequila. I decided to serve this margarita up with a Habernero Sugar rim from Sugar Pill in the Capital Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Sugar Pill is an amazing foodie store with a wide assortment of gourmet spices, salts and other culinary treasures.

I lined the martini glass with an even swipe of lime wedge, and then spread a little bit of the Habernero Sugar onto a small plate. Then I swirled the martini glass into the sugar mix. This sugar is HOT! Alternately I would serve these margaritas over ice in a small mexican glass tumbler.
You may have to slightly adjust the recipe proportions if your limes are not very sweet. Another variation would be to skip the orange liquor and add a little bit of agave nectar for a coin style margarita.
Now its your turn to make one, or two!

Evergreen Colorado Aspen Field Engagement Portrait Session

colorado aspen field portraits

I have a very quintessentially beautiful Colorado location near Evergreen Colorado that I like to take clients for their portrait sessions. This area includes a couple Aspen fields and I especially love photographing here in the fall. Autumn foliage in the higher elevations of Colorado can peak in early to mid September, way before people in Denver are even remotely thinking about fall photo sessions with lovely golden yellow aspen leaves.

With my wedding clients Shannon and Mark, we happened to be a a little late for peak fall colors, as the area had recently experienced its first snow in very early October. Snow fall in the high country Rocky Mountains can reach most months of the year. In fact, Denver received a good dump of snow yesterday: May 1st 2013!

What I love about this Aspen field, is that it looks amazing year round, especially with summer wildflowers.

The clouds broke for a few minutes to allow some perfect blue Colorado skies to contrast the Aspen.

For fill light I brought my SaberStrip and placed it on a light stand in a horizontal formation above the couple. The ground was a little muddy from the recent snow, but that did not deter our photo session.

Shannon and Mark loved this location for its Colorado outdoor beauty, as Mark is an avid fly fisher. I felt honored to photograph them in such a pretty Colorado mountain location.

White Sand, Blue Skies and Paisley: Florida Beach Model Session

florida beach portraits white sand blue skies

Sometimes a trip to the beach is a required break from wedding editing. And photographing a model is a great time to create new images and experiment.

The sunny F16 rules applies to shooting in bright daylight, and as photographers we need to have some serious flash power to match or overpower daylight. I decided to bring my Visatec monolight to Fort DeSoto Beach in Saint Petersburg Florida to experiment with cross lighting the sun.

My model Andrea had the perfect dress for the setting and we decided to keep the shades on!

Thomas Center Gainesville Florida Pregnancy Portraits

Pregnancy Portraits Tampa Bay Florida Photographer Kristen Sloan

Couples pregnancy portrait sessions are becoming popular with my clients, and this pregnancy portrait session showcases this jubilant time in an expecting couples life. Photographed on location the Thomas Center in Gainesville, Florida, we returned to the location where this couple were married. A very sweet, sentimental gesture and the Thomas Center’s grounds are very pretty with mature oaks and spanish moss.

Raindrops did not slow us from photographing this session, and the umbrellas became fun props.

Vinoy Park Beach and Coffee Pot Boulevard Saint Petersburg Florida Portraits

I photographed portraits of Ann in along scenic Coffee Pot Blvd in Saint Petersburg Florida. Coffe Pot Bayou provides a beautiful backdrop, and I especially love the white stucco spanish style park structures which featured bougainvillea in bloom. As the afternoon light progressed, we sought the golden hour light on the Vinoy Park beach.

During this shoot I mixed available light with fill light provided by two SaberStrips in an upside L formation. The SaberStrips in this formation create a soft box look, and allow space for me to photograph my subject. At times I used the fill light, at other times I just shot available light.
