This session goes to show that we don’t always need a colorful sunset to make great beach portraits. This family is from the Tampa Bay area and I think the summer dark skies completely compliment their attire. I love how their clothing in shades of cream and black and textured patterns creates awesome visual interest. I personally love darker colors at the beach and this session proves that sunset beach session don’t have to be all about pastels and summer brights.
Our clients braved the dark skies and met us in Treasure Island Beach near Bilmar Beach Resort and we walked north through the natural beach to our favorite beach location by Sunset Vistas Beachfront Suites and Residence Inn by Mariott Treasure Island. I captured portraits of each kid and mom as we meandered through the grasses palms.

A behind the scenes of how we light our sunset portraits- two SaberStrips on a boom stand. Probably the only modifier that we could use at the beach on this evening which is wind resistant. Love the softbox-esque light these produce!

Bilmar Beach Resort Family Portraits

My clients were spending a week at Bilmar Beach Resort from Canada and found some of my images from a previous Treasure Island family portrait session on Instagram. I usually suggest to clients that we schedule photos early in their vacation, just in case we have rain and need to reschedule. It was an overcast and rainy day for their original portrait session date and we were able to reschedule their session for a beautiful blue sky day!

We found this amazing section of beach with a nice shallow area of water to help create these sunset reflections.
The youngest boy was not a fan of the gulf waters and needed to be held during these family sunset portraits. I convinced him that watching photos and videos of my daughter on my iPhone was entertaining while Scott quickly captured this amazing shot of his parents. We love photographing well past the actual sunset and this image showcases how beautiful the sky can sometimes be 20 minutes past sunset.
